The -DifferenceObject parameter of the Compare-Object cmdlet tells PowerShell to compare the files and directories in $folder2 to those in $folder1. This tells PowerShell to use the files and directories in $folder1 as the reference for the comparison. In this case, we are using the Get-ChildItem cmdlet to get a list of files and directories in the $folder1 with -Recurse as parameter and passing that list to the -ReferenceObject parameter of the Compare-Object cmdlet. The ReferenceObject (Get-ChildItem $folder1) specifies the reference object and the data set that will be used as the basis for comparison. Then, the Compare-Object cmdlet compares the two data sets. First, the $ symbol creates a variable in PowerShell. Both the files will be opened in the main panel, side by side in inline view mode which is comfortable for comparing the differences.In the above code, we define two folders we want to compare, $folder1 and $folder2.Then right-click the second file and choose Compare with Selected.From the left Explorer panel, right-click the first file and choose Select for Compare from the right-click menu.Here are the simple steps to compare the contents of two code files in VS Code. So naturally VS code is my go-to tool for file comparison. I am using it for minor project development and even as a simple text editor. For me, VS Code comes in handy as it is cross platform and I am using it on both macOS and Windows. Even though there are several tools like Beyond Compare, Araxis Merge, etc… which have lot of comparison and merging features, I use Visual Studio Code for quick file comparison during development or otherwise.
